House Democrats On The Hunt For Higher Pay

With their annual salaries already sitting at about $174,000, House Democrats are suggesting that they need a pay raise. Beginning in January, this raise would add $4,500 of taxpayer dollars per year to Congressional salaries.

Congressional salaries were frozen in 2009, suspending automatic cost-of-living increases. Since, raise proposals have been struck down by the GOP.  Though with the House being dominated by Democrats following the 2018 elections, Congress may see a pay increase. House Democrats are setting their sights on 2020 fiscal funding that will no longer block these cost-of-living increases.

“There is strong bipartisan support for these modest inflation adjustments,” said Evan Hollander, a spokesperson for the House Appropriations Committee. The panel is not required to take action to allow these automatic increases. The language that would block the raises would be renounced.

Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) stated this week, “I think the American people would think that Congress ought to earn it first.”
