High-Risk Level-3 Viral Lab Under Siege in Kazakhstan

High-level Russian viral research laboratory

Kazakhstan's former head of counter-intelligence and anti-terrorism, Karim Masimov, has been arrested on charges of attempting to overthrow the Kazakhstani government. Authorities say security forces killed 26 demonstrators during the two week period of civil unrest, but independent sources estimate a total closer to 160 deaths.

A U.S. funded BSL-3 laboratory in Kazakhstan that studies viral strains, including COVID-19, is reported to have fallen into the hands of protestors during the uprising. Kazakhstani officials have denied reports that the controversial $102 million dollar laboratory was compromised — however, Russian media outlets reported a potential leak of deadly pathogens — similar to what some think may have occurred in 2019 at China’s virology laboratory in Wuhan, which set off a global pandemic.

Several Kazakhstani government offices, an airport and multiple buildings of interest were overtaken temporarily by government-opposed demonstrators during the two week incursion. Official Russian news agencies pointed out multiple social media reports claiming the Level-3 lab was overtaken by unidentified individuals near the deadly viral laboratory, including some seen wearing chemical protection suits.

Reports cited well-coordinated armed groups alongside protesters. Photos have emerged of weapons seized in the riots, and nearly 6,000 individuals have been detained - many being foreign nationals. It is not clear at this time where the alleged foreign provocateurs are from.

The laboratory was built in 2017 for the study of dangerous biological outbreaks, including the study of Covid-19 and other significantly more deadly viruses. The laboratory was funded in-part by American tax dollars, but U.S. personnel were not involved in the lab’s work at the time, according to Kazakhstani officials.

According to a 2013 article from National Geographic published prior to the lab’s completion,

“The facility, funded by the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, will have the additional benefit of giving stable employment to scientists who might otherwise be tempted to sell their high-level and potentially destructive knowledge to hostile groups. The facility will also be a secure place to archive existing disease strains.”

The report further continues,

“The threat of theft is real: In 2002, for example, authorities arrested a man who entered a biodefense facility near Almaty [Kazakhstan], apparently intending to steal the pathogens inside, according to a paper from the United States Institute of Peace.”

Not only may the world be at risk of another viral lab leak, but we could be in for much worse if risky gain-of-function research and bio-warfare development continues in this manner. Covid-19 killed millions globally and nearly crippled our economy, despite an extremely low mortality rate for healthy individuals and young people.

Something exponentially more deadly and significantly more contagious could escape, be intentionally released, or weaponized if we do not immediately increase our global diligence. Any one of these laboratories could contain a deadly pathogen which could wipe our entire human existence off the planet.

In 1979, the Soviet Minister of Defense took a young scientist named Vladimir Pasechnik under his wing, providing him with unlimited funding to begin a biological research facility to study viruses and develop vaccines. Pasechnik began to realize the horrific reality after several years of his Soviet-funded bio-research. The lab he created called the Institute of Ultra Pure Biochemical Preparations, was not developing vaccines as Pasechnik had been led to believe.

Pasechnik and his team were unknowingly part of a program called “Problem F.” The specific goal of this Soviet funded program was to develop and weaponize pathogens for use against humans. In other words, extremely deadly and highly secretive bio-warfare development.

After defecting to the United Kingdom in 1989, Pasechnik told British intelligence officers that he created “something so horrible that he couldn't sleep at night,” an aerosolized, antibiotic-resistant strain of the Bubonic plague — a weaponized version of the most horrific and deadly disease in all of human history.

Upon dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the weaponized plague virus and a number of other dangerous pathogen related research remained behind with little to no security. Many Soviet researchers instantly lost their employment and were left with nothing. To avoid starvation, some laboratory scientists sold off critical bio-weaponry secrets across Central Asia and the Middle East, while the remaining research materials were distributed to various labs around the world.

A serious biosecurity threat persists in former Soviet Union countries like Kazakhstan, where the Level-3 viral lab may have been temporarily occupied. The Russian government has at least five ultra-secretive “anti-plague” institutes in the region, with Kazakhstan being a contributor.

Officials in the Zhambyl region of northern Kazakhstan say there are plans in place to build a Level-4 laboratory and underground storage for the collection of deadly and highly volatile virus strains in 2025.

With the Biden Administration sending American troops to Eastern Europe, which may provoke a war between Ukraine and Russia, we may be at a higher risk than we are aware.

Not only could the president be provoking an unnecessary and deadly physical conflict for U.S. and allied soldiers, this conflict could lead to Russian retaliation in the form of a weaponized virus. Another possible outcome is that the former Soviet region may become unstable if war breaks out, leaving the high-level virology labs and the contained pathogens at risk of being leaked or stolen, which could potentially create a pathway to another global pandemic if we do not proceed with extreme caution.
